Bromelain
What is bromelain used for?
Bromelain is pineapple's protein-digesting enzyme, and people use it two ways. Take it with a meal to help digest protein, or on its own between meals, which is how people take it for everyday inflammation.

Is this the right digestive enzyme for you?
Common questions
Is bromelain a digestive enzyme or an anti-inflammatory?
Both, and when you take it decides which job it does. With a meal, it's simply an enzyme that digests protein, covered on our main digestive enzyme page. Taken on its own between meals, it's used for everyday inflammation instead. Seven trials looked at that use and most found it helped, while trials on bruising and swelling after surgery were less convinced. So the results are mixed rather than settled, and it's worth trying rather than proven.
Why is bromelain labelled in GDU or FIP units instead of milligrams?
Because it's sold by how active the enzyme is, not by weight. GDU and FIP units measure how much protein the enzyme can actually break down, which tells you more about its strength than a milligram figure would. It also means a milligram dose from a study can't be matched directly to a GDU or FIP number on a label.
