Multivitamin
Everyday cover for the gaps in your diet.

Is Multivitamin right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Do multivitamins actually do anything?
They raise your levels of the nutrients they contain. A trial in healthy people over 55 showed that for vitamin C and zinc after 12 weeks of a daily multi, though it changed nothing measurable about their immune function. What they don't do is change health outcomes when nothing's missing. Combined data on 91,074 people found no effect on how long people lived, and the US Preventive Services Task Force says there isn't enough evidence either way for heart disease or cancer. Think of it as a safety net, not a treatment.
What's the deal with the memory research?
It's real and worth knowing about. Across three randomised studies in 5,203 adults over 60, a daily supermarket multivitamin beat placebo on overall thinking skills and memory of everyday events. Two things to keep in mind: the effect is small (0.07 SD), and all of it comes from one trial programme rather than three independent teams. It's not nothing, but it's not settled either.
Is a gummy as good as a tablet?
For the nutrients that have been tested, the format holds up. A vitamin C gummy matched a caplet in blood levels, and a vitamin D3 gummy actually did better than the tablet. But no full gummy multivitamin has been trialled, and gummies usually leave out iron and use less of some minerals for taste. A gummy you take beats a tablet you don't.
Can I take one while pregnant?
A pregnancy formula, yes. That's what they're made for, and folic acid before and during early pregnancy has the strongest evidence of any nutrient here. A general multivitamin is a different question, because of the vitamin A. Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1) requires a birth defect warning on vitamin A, so check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any vitamin A supplement in pregnancy.
Is high potency better?
No, and the evidence points the other way. The safety review covering long-term daily use looked at doses up to 100% of the RDA for each nutrient. Several nutrients have firm limits, including B6, selenium, vitamin A and zinc, and they add up across products. Choose RDI-level doses, take them consistently, and let food do the rest.
