Is sea buckthorn a food or a skincare ingredient?
Both. The berries and seed oil are used as food and in skincare like oils, serums and body care. In Australia, it's sold under food or cosmetics rules rather than as a medicine. Its botanical name, Hippophae rhamnoides, is on Australia's permitted ingredients list, but we found no permitted health claim for it.
Is sea buckthorn regulated as a medicine in Australia?
Hippophae rhamnoides is item 2563 of Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1), so it can lawfully be used in a listed medicine, with no specific requirements or warnings. But we found no permitted health claim, and the sea buckthorn you'll find here, an oil supplement or a skincare product, is sold as a food or cosmetic ingredient rather than a medicine.
