Common questions

Why doesn't the label just say Garcinia Cambogia?

Because that's the plant's common name, not the name Australian rules use. Depending on which part of the plant a product uses, the label will call it Garcinia gummi-gutta, Garcinia quaesita, or hydroxycitric acid, the acid extracted from it. All three come from the same family, just under different names.

Is Garcinia Cambogia safe to take if I'm pregnant?

No. Under Australian rules, none of the three permitted forms (Garcinia gummi-gutta, Garcinia quaesita or hydroxycitric acid) can be recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. It's a firm exclusion, not just a caution, so it applies whatever the dose or product.

What does the liver warning on the label mean?

Every permitted form of Garcinia cambogia must carry a warning that, in very rare cases, it may harm the liver. It tells you to stop taking it and see a doctor if your skin or eyes turn yellow, or if you get unusual tiredness, nausea, loss of appetite, stomach pain, dark urine or itching.

  • Pregnancy and lactation. All three permitted names, Garcinia gummi-gutta, Garcinia quaesita and hydroxycitric acid, must not be indicated for use in pregnant or lactating women.
  • Children. The same three names must not be indicated for use in children.
  • Liver health. Each of the three carries a mandatory warning that, in very rare cases, it may harm the liver, with instructions to stop use and see a doctor over yellowing skin or eyes, or unusual fatigue, nausea, appetite loss, abdominal pain, dark urine or itching.
  • Prescription medicines. No interaction data was gathered for this family, so this is unanswered rather than cleared.

The evidence, and its limits

The Australian rules

"Garcinia Cambogia" isn't itself a Schedule 1 entry name under the Therapeutic Goods (Permissible Ingredients) Determination (No. 2) 2026. That's an absence, not a prohibition. The plant and its active acid are captured under three names instead, each permitted with conditions: Garcinia gummi-gutta, Garcinia quaesita, and hydroxycitric acid (item 2645). A product simply labelled "Garcinia Cambogia" has to map to one of those three to be lawfully supplied. Being a permitted ingredient isn't a government endorsement of any product or claim.
