Lecithin
What is lecithin?
Lecithin is a phospholipid mix from soybeans or sunflower seeds, and a natural source of choline because it carries phosphatidylcholine. Stir the granules through porridge or a smoothie, or take it as a capsule or liquid.

How the forms compare
Common questions
Is lecithin the same as choline?
No. Lecithin is a mix of phospholipids, and one of them is phosphatidylcholine, which carries choline. Phosphatidylcholine is roughly 13% choline by weight, worked out from its chemical formula. Lecithin's phosphatidylcholine content then ranges from about 30% to over 94% depending on the grade, so you can't assume how much choline is in a gram.
Does lecithin help memory?
Not on the evidence we have. A Cochrane review of 12 trials found none showed a clear benefit in Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's-related dementia, and concluded the evidence doesn't support using lecithin for dementia, while adding that a moderate effect can't be ruled out. Choose it as a food phospholipid instead.
Soy or sunflower lecithin. Does it matter?
For the phospholipid itself, nothing in our research separates them, because no one has compared them. It matters if you avoid soy: sunflower is the usual alternative, and egg lecithin is a third option. We haven't been able to confirm whether refined soy lecithin must carry an allergen declaration in Australia, so read the label.
