Bilberry
The wild Nordic cousin of the blueberry.
Bilberry is a small, dark berry from northern Europe, prized for the anthocyanins that give it its deep colour. You'll find it as a fruit extract on its own or blended with other plant extracts, and leaf extracts are a different product again.

Is Bilberry right for you?
Common questions
Is bilberry the same as blueberry?
They're close relatives, but not the same plant. Bilberry is Vaccinium myrtillus, a low shrub that grows wild in northern Europe. Blueberry is the one you buy by the punnet to eat. In Australian supplements, bilberry nearly always comes as a concentrated fruit or leaf extract rather than fresh fruit, so you'll find the two in very different parts of the shop.
Is bilberry regulated as a medicine in Australia?
It's a permitted ingredient in listed medicines, with two entries on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1): item 875 as BILBERRY and item 5120 as VACCINIUM MYRTILLUS. Neither comes with a required warning, a dose cap or a limit on how it's taken. Bilberry sold as a food falls under the Food Standards Code instead. It's the same plant under two sets of rules, and each set controls what can be said about it.
