Zinc
Zinc's what your body reaches for when it's fighting something off.
It also helps your cells grow and divide, and helps wounds close over. Most people get plenty from meat and seafood, so it's usually the ones eating little of either who run short.

Is Zinc right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Does zinc actually help with a cold?
The honest answer is that the evidence is mixed. A 2024 Cochrane review of zinc for the common cold rated its findings low-certainty: zinc may shorten a cold by around two days once you have one, with no clear benefit for preventing colds and no strong signal on severity. Side effects included nausea and unpleasant taste.
Why do zinc lozenges keep coming up if the evidence is mixed?
Because format may matter more than milligrams. A published critique argues the Cochrane review pooled products that work differently, and that the positive results came from lozenges dissolving slowly in the mouth. Often zinc acetate, at daily amounts above the 50 mg ceiling Australian listed medicines allow. Australian lozenges are therefore not the products that were studied.
How much zinc is safe to take every day?
The NHMRC Upper Level of Intake for adults is 40 mg a day counting food, water, fortified food and supplements together, and it is set on zinc's effect on copper. Australian listed medicines may recommend up to 50 mg. Anything above 25 mg a day must carry the mandatory zinc warning on the label.
Which form of zinc should I choose?
For everyday use the form matters less than the elemental dose and taking it with food. Amino acid chelate and citrate are the common well-tolerated choices, citrate suits chewables and liquids, gluconate is the lozenge standard, and sulfate is cheapest but the most likely to cause nausea. Zinc oxide is mainly for skin.
