Is Chai Indian Spiced right for you?
Common questions
Is chai the same as regular tea?
Not quite. Chai starts with black tea, then adds spices like cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and clove, so the flavour is warmer and spicier. Some blends also include black pepper. A packet labelled "chai" is really a black tea and spice mix, not a separate plant.
Is chai regulated as a medicine in Australia?
No. There's no entry for chai as a blend on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1), because it's sold as a food and drink rather than a listed medicine. The individual spices in it, such as cinnamon and ginger, each have their own entry when they're used in a supplement, but that's separate from a cup of tea.
