Description
Evolution Botanicals Himalayan Shilajit is a fine, dark brown powder made from shilajit, the herbo-mineral exudate that seeps from rock at high altitude in the Himalayas. The rock exudate is wild collected, then water extracted to a dry powder with only a very small amount of excipient to let it spray dry, so there is no bulking filler in it. Every batch is tested by an independent laboratory for heavy metals, pesticides and microbiological contaminants; the published certificate is from Merieux NutriSciences' Sydney laboratory, which is NATA accredited to ISO/IEC 17025. Colour varies a little from batch to batch, as it does with any wild collected material. It is a powder that dissolves in hot water, so it goes into a morning drink, a nourish bowl, baking or raw treats a teaspoon at a time.
Product Strengths
- Dissolves in hot water, so it can be drunk on its own as a tea.
- Stirs into drinks, nourish bowls, baking and raw treats without cooking.
- Shilajit (Asphaltum) rock exudate, wild collected at high altitude in the Himalayas.
- Water extracted to a dry powder, with no solvent other than water.
- Only a trace of excipient to allow spray drying, and no bulking filler.
- Every batch tested by an independent laboratory for heavy metals, pesticides and microbiological contaminants, with the certificate of analysis published.
- Comes in a resealable stand up pouch, sized to refill a violet glass jar.
- It comes as the 200 g pouch.

Shilajit
A sticky, tar-like resin that seeps out of rock high in the Himalaya, the Altai and the Caucasus.
It's neither plant nor mineral. You'll meet it as raw resin, as powder, and as standardised extracts. Those aren't the same purchase: every trial that found anything used purified or standardised material, not the raw resin most of the market sells. One more thing nobody tells you. Shilajit isn't on Australia's permitted ingredients list, under any of its names.

How the forms compare
Common questions
Why doesn't this page tell me what shilajit does?
Because in Australia it legally can't, and we'd rather explain that than dance around it. Shilajit isn't a permitted ingredient in Schedule 1, so it can't be the active of a listed medicine, and permitted indications only attach to listed medicines. That leaves no lawful therapeutic claim to make. What we can do is tell you what it is, what the research found, and where the gaps are.
Is the research any good?
Better than you'd guess and thinner than it looks. There are several genuine randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials, which is more than many ingredients manage. But the strongest one is a bone density result in diagnosed osteopenia, the testosterone trial reports no sample size or effect sizes, the strength result holds only in a subgroup, and the one resin study is open-label with no control group. The 2014 review's closing line still stands: well-controlled studies using standardised products are needed.
Resin or capsules?
On the evidence, they're not the same purchase. Every trial that found anything used purified or standardised material. The raw resin that dominates the market has one open-label uncontrolled study behind it, and those researchers said themselves that clinical evidence on the resin form is limited. If the research is why you're buying, buy the format the research used.
What about the "84 minerals" thing?
We can't stand behind it. The verified statement in our sources is that one analytical study quantified 14 elements by ICP-MS. And the identities and concentrations aren't in the published abstract. Mineral-count claims on shilajit labels aren't sourced to anything we can check. Since it's a rock exudate, what's in it is also the reason to ask for testing data.
Is it safe?
The trials that monitored tolerability reported no significant difference in adverse effects from placebo, over periods up to 48 weeks. But two things are genuinely unknown. Nobody has published data on unpurified raw resin, and no pregnancy, breastfeeding, paediatric or drug-interaction data was located at all. And because shilajit isn't a listed medicine ingredient, no product containing it has been assessed for identity, purity and contaminants under that framework.
