Calcium
Your bones are where nearly all your calcium lives, and they get raided when you don't eat enough.
Blood calcium stays steady no matter what, because your body takes what it needs from the skeleton. That's the reason to care about intake. It works best alongside vitamin D, which is what lets you absorb it in the first place.

Is Calcium right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Should I take calcium on its own or with vitamin D?
With vitamin D, on the evidence. Across 15 trials in 51,126 adults the combination reduced any fracture, on high-certainty evidence. Vitamin D alone did nothing across 36 trials in 92,045 people. Calcium alone sat in between and didn't reach significance. Vitamin D is what lets you absorb calcium, so the pairing isn't a marketing decision.
What's the difference between calcium carbonate and calcium citrate?
Elemental content and how you take it. Carbonate is 40% calcium by weight, so you get more per tablet, but it needs stomach acid and is best taken with food. Citrate is about 21%, so tablets are bigger or doses smaller, but it absorbs without stomach acid. If you're on antacids or reflux medicine, citrate is usually the better pick.
Can I take too much calcium?
Yes, and this is one where more isn't better. The Upper Level is 2,500 mg a day from all sources, food included. Randomised evidence found 1,000 mg of calcium carbonate with vitamin D raised kidney stone risk. If you've had a stone before, talk to us or your doctor before starting.
