Vitamin C
The everyday vitamin that holds you together.
Vitamin C helps build the collagen in your skin, bones and blood vessels, supports wound healing, and helps you absorb iron from your food. Your body can't store it, so a small top-up every day keeps you covered.

Is Vitamin C right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
How much vitamin C do you need a day in Australia?
The NHMRC Recommended Dietary Intake is 45 mg a day for adult men and women, 60 mg in pregnancy and 85 mg while breastfeeding. One medium orange or half a cup of raw red capsicum already gives you more than the adult figure. No Upper Level has been set, though 1,000 mg a day is described as a prudent limit.
Does vitamin C prevent colds?
Not for most people. When 29 trial comparisons in 11,306 people were pooled, taking vitamin C regularly made essentially no difference to how often people got sick (a relative risk of 0.97). Colds were around 8% shorter in adults and 14% shorter in children. A separate group under extreme physical stress showed a much larger effect.
Is Ester-C better than ordinary vitamin C?
Not measurably, based on the comparison available. A study of three sources, ascorbic acid, Ester-C and ascorbic acid with bioflavonoids, found no difference in blood vitamin C levels or in how much was lost in urine. What buffered calcium ascorbate does offer is lower acidity, which matters if plain ascorbic acid upsets your stomach. That's about comfort, not better absorption.
Can you take too much vitamin C?
The usual result is an upset tummy rather than toxicity: diarrhoea, nausea and cramps from unabsorbed vitamin C drawing water into your gut. Absorption also drops below 50% above 1 g a day, so much of a large dose simply passes out of your body. People with iron overload or hyperoxaluria need real caution at high doses.
