Is Almonds right for you?
Common questions
What's the difference between almond meal and almond flour?
Meal is usually ground with the skins left on, so it's coarser and flecked brown. Flour is normally made from blanched almonds with the skins removed, so it's finer and paler. Recipes often use the names interchangeably, and either works in most baking. Check the pack if the colour or texture of what you're making matters to you.
Are almonds regulated as a medicine in Australia?
Almond is on the permitted ingredients list for listed medicines (item 476), where it's used as an inactive ingredient (excipient). But almonds sold as food, whether whole or as meal, butter, oil or milk, come under food standards law instead, not medicine rules. We couldn't find a permitted health claim specific to almonds.
