Precautions
Arnica
What is arnica used for?
People rub arnica cream or gel onto unbroken skin after a knock, a sprain or a heavy session. It's a first aid classic for knocks and bruises, and used on the skin is the way arnica has trials behind it.

Is Arnica right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Does arnica actually work for bruises?
Sometimes, and it depends on the form. A review of eleven nose-surgery trials found less bruising and swelling around the eyes in the first week with arnica. But the best-designed trial of arnica on the skin, in 136 eyelid-surgery patients with a placebo on one side, found no difference at all. The reviews are split, so it's worth a try rather than proven.
What's the difference between the arnica cream and the little tablets?
They're two different products that share a name. A herbal cream or gel contains a measurable amount of the plant, shows a percentage or extract ratio, and is what the skin trials used. The tablets, pillules and sprays are homeopathic dilutions that state a potency instead, and their evidence is much weaker, including a 400-runner trial that found no effect.
Can I put arnica on a cut or a graze?
No. Arnica products are for unbroken skin only. Once the skin is broken, both the rules and the risks change. Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1) only allows unrestricted use on unbroken skin and caps everything else at 1 mg of dry herb equivalent a day, and European guidance says these medicines are for unbroken skin.
