Turmeric is one of the products we're asked about most. These are the questions our naturopaths ask in store: what it suits, what needs a chat, and what rules it out.

A good fit if

• You want a measured whole-root product rather than an isolated extract
• You're an adult with no gallbladder, bile duct or liver history and no prescription medicines
• You want the traditional digestive use European regulators recognise, not a concentrated modern extract
• You'd rather start with the least-processed form and only move to a standardised extract on advice
• You're happy to read the label, including the dried root equivalent and the liver warning

Check with us first if

• You take blood thinners or antiplatelet medicines such as warfarin, apixaban, clopidogrel or aspirin. There's a known increased risk of bleeding.
• You take any medicine with a narrow safety margin. Curcumin slows the CYP3A4, CYP1A2 and CYP2D6 liver enzymes that clear many medicines.
• You're having chemotherapy, or taking tamoxifen or tacrolimus. Interactions have been reported, so decide this with your oncology team.
• You've had kidney stones. Turmeric contains oxalate, and oxalate-related kidney damage has been reported.
• You have low iron or take iron supplements. Iron-deficiency anaemia has been reported with turmeric supplements.
• You're buying for someone aged 2 to 17. Australian rules limit daily curcumin by age group, so check the label rather than guessing.
• You get reflux, nausea or loose stools easily. Those are the most common side effects.
• You're considering a high-strength or enhanced-absorption product. Those are the types linked to reported liver injury.
• You're buying from an overseas website. Those products aren't regulated by the TGA for quality and safety.

• Ground turmeric (culinary spice). Best known for: The kitchen staple. Sold as a food, not a medicine, and the oldest form of use. Absorption: Low and variable; curcuminoids sit inside plant starch, and cooking fat and heat change the release. Typical use: A quarter to one teaspoon through curries, rice, dhal, soups and eggs.
• Fresh rhizome. Best known for: Flavour and aroma, because the volatile oils lost in drying survive. Absorption: Same limits as the spice; high water content means less curcuminoid per gram. Typical use: Grated into dressings, juices and stir-fries; a produce-aisle item, not a supplement.
• Turmeric tea and golden latte blends. Best known for: A low-dose daily ritual, usually blended with ginger, cinnamon or pepper. Absorption: Poor in water alone; blends add fat or pepper because water extracts so little. Typical use: One or two cups a day. A food-style amount, not a therapeutic one.
• Whole-root capsules and tablets. Best known for: Turmeric as a listed medicine. A measured whole-root dose, not an isolate. Absorption: Same constraint as the spice, which is why labels lean on dry-root equivalence. Typical use: Read the label: a headline '30,000 mg' is a dry-rhizome equivalent, not tablet weight.
• Standardised curcuminoid extract. Best known for: Concentrating the markers so the dose can be stated in milligrams of curcuminoids. Absorption: Still poor unless the formulation is engineered. Hence the bioavailability technologies. Typical use: Sold as curcumin rather than turmeric; see our separate curcumin entry.
• Liquid and fermented turmeric. Best known for: A drinkable option for people who dislike tablets, often sold on the fermentation. Absorption: Not well characterised; comparative human data against powders and extracts is thin. Typical use: A measured 15–30 mL dose, sometimes with juice or apple cider vinegar.

Reference values. None. Turmeric is a spice and a herbal medicine, not an essential nutrient, so the NHMRC sets no RDI, EAR or Adequate Intake for it. There's no amount you need to get.

Typical supplemental range. The European traditional use guidance for turmeric root lists 0.5–1 g of powdered root two to three times a day, tinctures at 0.5–1 mL three times a day, and dry extracts of 90–162 mg (DER 13–25:1) or 100–200 mg twice a day (DER 5.5–6.5:1). Australian labels rarely use those units. They usually show an extract with a dried root equivalent, so '30,000 mg' on the front of a bottle means the extract inside matches that weight of raw root. It isn't thirty grams of anything.

Upper level. There's no NHMRC upper limit for turmeric. Australia does set a legal limit for children, in milligrams of curcumin a day, quoted word for word in the Australian status section below, and it can't be used under two years of age.

Worth knowing. How long you take it matters as much as how much: the European guidance says to see a doctor or qualified practitioner if digestive symptoms last more than two weeks. Cooking with turmeric and taking a supplement are very different. A typical diet gives you a fraction of a gram of spice a day, while a capsule routine can match many grams of root. What you need depends on your age, diet and health, so talk to one of our naturopaths.

Food first, where the diet allows it.

• Ground turmeric, the dried spice: about 3 g per level teaspoon; a family curry might use 1–2 teaspoons across four serves
• Fresh turmeric rhizome: A 3–4 cm finger grates to roughly 15 g, most of which is water
• Curry powder and blended masalas: usually the colouring base, often 10–30% of the blend by weight
• Golden latte and turmeric tea blends: around 1–2 g per cup, depending on the blend
• Prepared mustards, pickles, some cheeses and margarines: trace amounts, used as a natural yellow colour rather than for flavour
• Habitual Indian dietary intake, for scale: about 200 mg a day urban, 600 mg rural, up to roughly 1,000 mg across Asia

• Children under 2. Not permitted for use (Permissible Ingredients Determination).
• Children and adolescents 2–17. Maximum daily curcumin content regulated by age band.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Medicinal use not recommended; safety not established (EMA/HMPC).
• Bile duct obstruction, cholangitis, gallstones, biliary disease. Advised against; may stimulate bile secretion.
• Liver disease, current or past. Advised against; rare liver injury documented; label warning mandatory.
• Jaundice, dark urine, fatigue, nausea, appetite loss, abdominal pain or itching. Stop and see a doctor.
• Anticoagulant and antiplatelet medicines. Increased bleeding risk.
• Medicines cleared by CYP3A4, CYP1A2 or CYP2D6. Curcumin inhibits these enzymes.
• Chemotherapy, tamoxifen, tacrolimus. Reported interactions; oncology advice required.
• History of kidney stones. Oxalate content; oxalate nephropathy reported.
• Iron deficiency or iron supplementation. iron-deficiency anaemia reported.
• Reflux, nausea or loose stools. Common tolerability complaints.
• Enhanced-absorption and high-strength formulations. Most often named in liver injury reports.
• Hypersensitivity to turmeric or any product ingredient.
