Valerian
How do I choose a valerian product?
Pick the form that suits you, because it's the same valerian root behind all of them. Choose tablets, capsules, drops to count into water, or dried root for tea.

Is Valerian right for you?
Common questions
Why does every Australian valerian supplement label carry a liver warning?
Because Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1) requires it. Items 5125, 5127 and 5129 all say the same thing: when a valerian medicine is taken by mouth, the label must carry the warning 'In rare cases, valerian may harm the liver. Stop use and see a doctor if you have yellowing skin/eyes or unusual: fatigue, nausea, appetite loss, abdominal pain, dark urine or itching.' It's a condition of the ingredient being permitted at all, so it appears on every valerian medicine taken by mouth sold here, not just certain brands.
Is there an approved health claim for valerian in Australia?
No. We checked all 17 parts of the TGA's permitted health claims list and found no entry for valerian, so there's no permitted health wording we can use for this herb. Being a permitted ingredient means valerian can legally go into a listed medicine. It doesn't say what that medicine can claim, and it isn't a government endorsement of the herb.
Are valerian tea and valerian capsules the same thing?
They come from the same root, but they're sold under different rules. Tablets, capsules and drops are listed medicines, so they're covered by Schedule 1, limited to use by mouth, and carry the liver warning. Dried root sold as tea is a food and sits outside those rules, so it carries no Schedule 1 warning. The amount of root you get depends on the product in each case, and we don't have a figure for either.
