Magnesium
Magnesium's what your muscles and nerves run on. Go short and it tends to show up as headaches, fatigue or weakness.
It's also part of keeping your blood sugar and blood pressure steady. There are several forms on the shelf, and they differ mostly in how much you absorb.

How the forms compare
Common questions
Which form of magnesium is best absorbed?
Forms that dissolve well absorb best. Magnesium in citrate, chloride, lactate and aspartate forms is absorbed more completely than magnesium oxide or sulfate, and one review puts oxide absorption as low as 4%. Glycinate and chloride also absorb well and are usually gentler on the bowel. Oxide is cheap but poorly absorbed.
How much magnesium is too much?
The NHMRC sets an Upper Level of Intake of 350 mg a day for supplemental magnesium in people aged nine and over. 110 mg for ages four to eight, and 65 mg for ages one to three. That ceiling covers supplements and medicines only, not magnesium from food.
Does magnesium interact with medicines?
Yes. Magnesium can bind bisphosphonates and some antibiotics, so it should be separated from them. At least two hours for bisphosphonates, and two hours before or four to six hours after tetracyclines and quinolones. Loop and thiazide diuretics increase magnesium losses in urine. Check with your doctor or pharmacist first.
What does the evidence actually say about magnesium and sleep?
It is thinner than the marketing suggests. Systematic reviews have reported a shorter time to fall asleep, around 17 minutes in one analysis, but reviewers judge the overall quality of the trials insufficient for firm recommendations. Anxiety and mood evidence is similarly low quality. Honest answer: promising, not proven.
