Magnesium Citrate
What does magnesium citrate do?
Magnesium citrate helps your muscles relax and supports normal nerve function, and it's a popular pick if you'd also like a little help staying regular. It dissolves easily, so you absorb a good share of it.

Is this the right magnesium for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Should you take magnesium citrate or magnesium glycinate?
It comes down to your bowels. Citrate is well absorbed and draws a little water into your gut, so it suits you if you'd also welcome easier bowel movements, but it's an awkward choice for a big dose at bedtime. Glycinate is the gentler form and the usual pick for bigger evening doses. Ask us if you're not sure.
Does magnesium citrate cause diarrhoea?
It can, and that's just how this form works rather than a fault in the product. The magnesium you don't absorb draws water into your gut and gets things moving. Loose stools depend on the dose, so splitting your daily amount into two or three doses and taking it with food usually settles things.
Why doesn't magnesium citrate carry a laxative warning in Australia?
Because that warning applies to the mineral (inorganic) forms of magnesium, like oxide, chloride, hydroxide and the phosphates, and citrate is an organic form. Its entries on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1, items 3153 to 3155) have no special requirements. A blend that includes oxide can still need the warning, so read the ingredients panel rather than the front of the pack.
