Is Wheatgrass right for you?
Common questions
Does wheatgrass contain gluten?
Gluten is found in the wheat seed, and wheatgrass is the leaf, cut before the seed forms. Australia's ingredient rules reflect that. The gluten condition applies to wheat (Triticum aestivum) seed, while wheat leaf (item 5199) has no condition at all. Wheat is still an allergen that must be declared under the Food Standards Code, so if you have coeliac disease or a wheat allergy, read the label and talk to us before you start.
Is wheatgrass the same as barley grass?
No. They're the young leaves of two different cereal plants, wheat and barley, though both are sold the same way, as a green powder. Both come from gluten cereals, so the same label check applies to each. If you'd rather avoid cereal grasses altogether, chlorella and spirulina are greens that don't come from a grain plant.
