Barley Grass

Your daily green, straight from the barley leaf.

Barley grass is the young leaf, cut before any grain forms, then dried and milled into a fine green powder. Enjoy it on its own, as one of the greens in a blend, or in easy pre-measured capsules.

Is Barley Grass right for you?

Common questions

Does barley grass contain gluten?

Gluten is in the barley seed, and barley grass is the leaf, cut before the seed forms. Australia's ingredient rules reflect that: the gluten condition applies to barley (Hordeum vulgare) seed, while barley leaf (item 770) has no such condition. Barley is still an allergen that must be declared under the Food Standards Code, so if you're coeliac, read the label and talk to us before you start.

Powder or capsules?

It's the same ingredient for a different job. Powder is what you want if it's going into a smoothie or a glass of water. Capsules are pre-measured and you don't taste them, which is the main reason people choose them. If you're buying a greens blend instead, barley grass is often already one of the greens in it.

The evidence, and its limits

The Australian rules

Barley grass is the leaf, and the leaf has its own entry. BARLEY LEAF is item 770 on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1, Determination No. 2 of 2026), allowed in listed medicines as a non-active ingredient (purpose code E), with no specific requirements and no warning statement. Two separate entries cover the plant and its grain: BARLEY at item 769 and HORDEUM VULGARE at item 2583, both allowed with conditions, and the condition on each is about gluten and written for the seed rather than the leaf. That entry means barley leaf can be used in a listed medicine; it doesn't make it a therapeutic active, and we found no barley grass permitted indication. Most barley grass in Australia is sold as a food or food ingredient anyway, which comes under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code rather than the medicines rules. Barley is a cereal containing gluten and an allergen that must be declared under that Code, so the label on the product in your hand is what answers the gluten question. Being allowed isn't the government endorsing a product.

Read the instrument: Schedule 1, item 770.
