Turmeric
Golden turmeric, a traditional favourite.
Its active part, curcumin, is an antioxidant that helps protect your cells from damage. That's why you'll often find it paired with black pepper or in a fat-based formula, to help your body take it up.

Is Turmeric right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
What is the difference between turmeric and curcumin?
Turmeric is the whole dried root of Curcuma longa. Curcumin is one compound inside it, part of a group called curcuminoids that make up only about two to nine per cent of the root by weight. So every turmeric product contains some curcumin, but a curcumin supplement is a concentrated extract rather than the spice.
Do you need black pepper for turmeric to be absorbed?
Curcuminoids are poorly absorbed on their own, and piperine from black pepper slows the liver enzymes that break them down, which raises blood levels. That's why traditional recipes pair the two. Keep in mind that enhanced-absorption products, including piperine combinations, are the ones most often named in reports of liver injury.
Is turmeric bad for your liver?
For most people, no. But liver injury has been documented often enough that Australia requires a warning on every turmeric medicine taken by mouth. Published cases usually appear one to four months after starting, and more than seventy per cent of people affected carry a particular genetic variant. Avoid turmeric supplements if you've had any liver problems, and stop if you notice yellowing of your skin or eyes (jaundice).
How much turmeric should you use?
European traditional use guidance for the powdered root is half a gram to one gram, two or three times a day. Australian labels show an extract with a dried root equivalent instead, so a big number on the front of the pack isn't the weight in the capsule. What you need depends on your age, diet and health, so talk to one of our naturopaths.
