Rescue Remedy

What is Rescue Remedy?

Rescue Remedy is a blend of five Bach flower essences, taken as drops in water, a spray or a pastille. It's the Bach tradition's go-to for tense moments, and people like to keep it handy for exams, flights and speeches.

Is Rescue Remedy right for you?

People often ask for Rescue Remedy by name, and our naturopaths are happy to talk it through honestly, including what the trials found and what might suit you better.

A good fit if

  • You already use the Bach tradition and want its go-to formula for an exam, a flight or a speech
  • You understand it's a tradition, and the trials haven't shown it works better than a placebo
  • You'd like something very unlikely to cause side effects, in the format that suits you

Check with us first if

  • You're pregnant or breastfeeding. No trial has studied it in pregnancy and no warning applies to the five plants, which isn't the same as evidence that it's safe. The alcohol in the standard drops is the practical concern.
  • It's for a child. The one trial in children ran for three months with no safety concerns reported, and an alcohol-free format is the sensible choice.
  • Your nerves are frequent or ongoing rather than the odd tense moment. That's worth a proper chat, and some herbs have done better than placebo in trials.
  • If you take prescription medicine, check with your doctor, pharmacist or our naturopaths before you start.

How the forms compare

  • Rescue Remedy drops. Best known for: The original format: a few drops in a glass of water. Absorption: Not applicable. There's no meaningful dose to absorb. Typical use: Four drops in water is the amount most trials used. The drops are preserved in alcohol, which matters for kids, pregnancy and anyone avoiding alcohol.
  • Rescue Remedy spray. Best known for: The same essences sprayed into the mouth, with no glass of water needed. Absorption: Not applicable. Typical use: A convenience choice. No trial has tested the spray on its own.
  • Rescue Pastilles and other alcohol-free chewables. Best known for: No alcohol, and easy to take on the go. Absorption: Not applicable. Typical use: The alcohol-free way into the same tradition. No trial has tested this format.
  • Individual Bach remedies (the 38). Best known for: A personal blend chosen for you, rather than the fixed five. Absorption: Not applicable. Typical use: The Bach Centre describes the crisis formula as being for immediate problems and suggests a personal blend for anything ongoing.

Common questions

Does Rescue Remedy actually work?

The trials say it doesn't work better than a placebo. A 2010 systematic review found seven randomised trials of flower remedies, and none of the placebo-controlled ones showed an effect. A 2009 review of four trials found no overall benefit over placebo. People still find it helpful as a ritual, and it's very unlikely to cause harm.

Is Rescue Remedy homeopathic, and has the TGA assessed it?

It's homoeopathic in the legal sense, because Australian rules define homoeopathic products by the way they're diluted again and again. Its five plants are all permitted ingredients. But highly diluted homoeopathic products are usually exempt from the ARTG, which means they haven't been assessed or approved. Check the pack for an AUST L number to see which applies.

Can I give Rescue Remedy to my child?

Australia's permitted ingredients list sets no age limit for its five plants, and one three-month trial in school-aged children reported no safety concerns. The catch is the alcohol in the standard drops and spray, so an alcohol-free format such as the pastilles is the sensible choice for kids. Check with us first if you're unsure.

How much, and when

Reference values. There aren't any. Rescue Remedy isn't a nutrient, so there's no reference intake and no deficiency to correct.

Typical supplemental range. Follow the directions on the pack, as we haven't checked Australian pack directions for this page. In the published trials, the usual amount was four drops in water, from a single time up to four times a day for three months.

Upper level. Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1) sets no daily maximum for any of the five plants. With the standard drops, the practical limit is the alcohol base rather than the essences.

Worth knowing. What you need depends on your age, diet and health, so talk to one of our naturopaths.

Food sources

Food first, where the diet allows it.

  • None. The five plants aren't foods and aren't eaten as such: rescue Remedy has no dietary source, and it isn't something you can run low on

Before you start

If any of these sound like you, talk to one of our naturopaths or your doctor before you start.

  • You're using it instead of effective treatment. As Ernst noted in 2010, in severe illness this "could become life-threatening". It's the only serious risk with these remedies.
  • You're pregnant or breastfeeding. There's no pregnancy data and no Schedule 1 warning either way, and the alcohol base is the practical issue. Get advice rather than assuming it's fine.
  • Children. Schedule 1 sets no age limit, and one trial in children (3 months) reported no safety concerns. Alcohol-free formats are the better choice.
  • You avoid alcohol, including if you're in recovery or for faith reasons. Standard drops are alcohol-based; we couldn't confirm the exact percentage.
  • You're expecting a proven effect. Two systematic reviews found no benefit over placebo.
  • Interactions with medicines. None were found in any source, and with no meaningful dose one is unlikely. The real risk is using it in place of treatment.

The evidence, and its limits

  • In the Bach tradition, Rescue Remedy is used for exam nerves, but every placebo-controlled trial of flower remedies found no benefit. (DOI record)
  • A 2009 systematic review of four randomised trials in 312 people found no overall benefit over placebo. (DOI record)
  • Trials used four drops in water, the same as everyday use, so too small a dose doesn't explain the lack of effect. (DOI record)
  • In the often-quoted 2007 trial of 111 students, scores fell on placebo too; its positive finding compared people only with themselves, not with placebo. (DOI record)
  • Across 41 homeopathy trials and 6,055 people, side effects were no more common than in the comparison groups. (DOI record)
  • All five plant ingredients are allowed, each listed on Schedule 1 as a homoeopathic ingredient. (Schedule 1, items 1480, 2504, 2691, 3617, 4192)

How it works

There's no measurable plant dose in the bottle to act on your body. Flower essences are made using the method Australian law defines as homoeopathic, where a mother tincture is diluted again and again, so nothing in Rescue Remedy works by giving you an active plant compound. Instead, the Bach system chooses remedies by emotional state. Rock Rose is its remedy for terror, Impatiens for impatience and frustration, Cherry Plum for the fear of losing control, Star of Bethlehem for the after-effects of shock, and Clematis for a mind that drifts away from the present. That's why the tradition puts these five together. A seven-person pilot study, published only as a poster, reported a change in heart rate variability, but it's far too small to support any claim.

The Australian rules

All five Rescue Remedy plant ingredients are on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1, Determination No. 2 of 2026). Rock Rose (item 2504), Impatiens (2691), Star of Bethlehem (3617) and Clematis (1480) have no conditions. Cherry Plum (4192) is allowed with a cap on two naturally occurring compounds. All five are coded as homoeopathic ingredients. Schedule 1 doesn't list brand or combination names, so "Rescue Remedy" not appearing there isn't a ban.

Which pathway a product is on decides what can be said about it. Highly dilute homoeopathic preparations are exempt from the ARTG under Schedule 5, item 8(a) of the Therapeutic Goods Regulations 1990. Exempt means the TGA hasn't assessed or approved them, and the exemption holds only while the product isn't presented as treating or preventing a disease or condition. A product with an AUST L number is a listed medicine instead, and can only use wording from Australia's permitted indications list. Check the pack for an AUST L number. Being an allowed ingredient isn't the government endorsing a product.

Read the instrument: Schedule 1, items 1480, 2504, 2691, 3617, 4192.
