DHA
The omega-3 your brain and eyes are built with.
Your body can't make useful amounts of DHA, so it comes from oily fish or a supplement. Check the DHA line on the back of the pack, as most fish oil leans towards EPA.

How the forms compare
Common questions
How much DHA do you need during pregnancy?
Australia doesn't set a separate DHA figure, as the NHMRC values cover EPA, DPA and DHA together. Australian pregnancy products commonly list 200 to 500 milligrams of DHA per dose, but the right amount for you is a decision for your antenatal team, not the shelf. Take the product you're considering to your midwife or doctor.
Can you get DHA without eating fish?
Yes. Marine microalgae make DHA in the first place, and fish build it up by eating them. Farmed Schizochytrium oil gives you ready-made DHA with no fish, shellfish or mollusc content, and it has its own entry on Australia's permitted ingredients list. Plant oils such as flaxseed and chia contain no DHA at all, only ALA, which your body uses to start making it.
Does DHA turn into EPA in the body?
Not directly. In a 12-week randomised trial using about three grams a day, DHA raised blood EPA by around 130 per cent, but tracer studies showed this came from saving existing EPA rather than turning DHA back into it. It mostly works the other way: EPA from supplements is turned into DHA in large amounts.
