Garlic
Get through cold season with milder symptoms.
In a trial that ran a whole cold season, people taking aged garlic extract had milder symptoms and missed fewer days. Garlic also supports your heart and healthy cholesterol.

Is Garlic right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Does garlic stop you getting colds?
In the best trial, no. Taking aged garlic extract through a whole cold season didn't change how often 120 healthy adults got sick. What changed was how bad it was: 21% fewer symptoms, 61% fewer days feeling below par, and 58% fewer days off. A Cochrane review came to a different view, but it found only one trial that met its criteria and said so.
Will garlic lower my cholesterol?
On average it shifts cholesterol a little, mostly in people whose numbers aren't ideal to begin with, and over months rather than weeks. We don't want to oversell it. In a 2023 trial comparing garlic and several other supplements with rosuvastatin 5 mg, the statin cut LDL by 35.2% and none of the supplements did better than placebo. Garlic works alongside your medical care, not instead of it.
Which form should I buy?
Match it to what you want. Aged garlic extract has the only good immune trial. Standardised powder tablets are the form used in most cholesterol and heart research. Garlic oil is chemically different, and it's the form with the known interaction with how your body processes some medicines. If garlic breath would put you off, aged and deodorised forms exist for that reason, though there's no trial showing they work as well.
Is garlic safe with my medicines?
It's usually well tolerated, and trials consistently report no serious side effects. The exceptions matter, though. If you take warfarin or another blood thinner, antiplatelet medicine, diabetes medicine or HIV medicine, talk to your prescriber first. And stop high doses 7 to 10 days before surgery.
How much, and for how long?
Trials have used 80 mg to 4,000 mg a day. The cold-season trial used 2.56 g of aged extract a day for 90 days, and most cholesterol trials used 900 mg of powder, about one clove's worth. One review found the benefits were clearer with lower doses taken for longer, so give it a few months. We can't tell you whether a particular Australian product matches those doses, so bring the label in and we'll look at it with you.
