Hemp Seeds

The seed you sprinkle on food, and the oil that's pressed from it.

Hulled hemp seeds, often sold as hearts, go on porridge, salads and smoothies. Hemp seed oil is the same seed pressed, and it's sold as capsules or a liquid under medicine rules, with its own label warnings. Which one you want comes down to whether you're cooking or taking a supplement.

See what we checked

Is Hemp Seeds right for you?

Here's the triage our naturopaths run on hemp, and nearly all of it comes down to which hemp product you've actually got in your hand.

A good fit if

  • You're an adult adding hulled hemp seeds to everyday food, where they're sold and regulated as a food rather than a medicine
  • You want the oil in a capsule or a dropper and you're comfortable reading the daily dose off the label
  • You take one hemp seed oil product at a time, which is what the Determination's label warning asks of you
  • You want to know which set of rules applies to the product in front of you before you buy it

Check with us first if

  • You take prescription medicines. Our research pass gathered no interaction evidence for hemp seed or hemp seed oil at all, so this is a check rather than a cleared question.
  • You're pregnant or breastfeeding. No Australian position on hemp seed oil in pregnancy was found in our research, and an absence of evidence isn't a green light.
  • You already eat foods made with hemp seed oil and you're thinking of adding a supplement on top, because the label warning covers food sources as well as medicines.
  • You're buying hemp seed oil for a child over 2, since the Determination sets the under-2 line but says nothing about doses for older children.
  • If you take prescription medicines, check with your doctor, pharmacist or our naturopaths before starting.

Common questions

Will hemp seeds or hemp seed oil affect a drug test, or make me feel anything?

Nothing in this entry can tell you how a given test will read, and we won't guess. What the Australian rules do set is a ceiling: hemp seed oil used in a listed medicine must contain no more than 10 mg/kg of total tetrahydrocannabinols and no more than 75 mg/kg of total cannabidiol. If a drug test matters for your work, ask your employer or your doctor before you take any hemp product.

Why does hemp seed oil have label warnings when hemp seeds don't?

Because they're regulated under different frameworks. Whole and hulled seeds are sold as a food and sit outside the medicines rules. Hemp seed oil is item 2515 of the Permissible Ingredients Determination, so when it's used in a listed medicine it carries that item's conditions: cannabinoid ceilings, oral route only, a 36 g daily cap, and two required label warnings.

Is there an approved health claim for hemp in Australia?

No. The TGA permitted indications list, checked across all 17 Parts, returns no entry for hemp seeds or hemp seed oil, which means there's no permitted therapeutic wording we can use for this family. Hemp seed oil being a permitted ingredient says it may lawfully go into a listed medicine. It doesn't say what that medicine may claim.

Before you start

This list is the part of the page we will not shorten. If any of it applies to you, talk to one of our naturopaths or your doctor before starting.

  • Children under 2 years, for hemp seed oil. Item 2515 of the Permissible Ingredients Determination requires the label warning 'Not for use in children under 2 years of age'.
  • Anyone already taking or eating another hemp seed oil product the same day. The Determination requires the label warning 'Not to be taken on the same day with other products containing hemp seed oil, including food sources'.
  • Anyone on prescription medicines. No interaction evidence for hemp seed or hemp seed oil was gathered in our research pass, so no interaction position can be stated either way.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding. No Australian safety position was found in our research pass for hemp seed oil, so it's unanswered rather than cleared.
  • Anyone using a product that provides more than 36 g of hemp seed oil a day, or by any route other than oral, both of which fall outside what the Determination permits in a listed medicine.

The evidence, and its limits

The Australian rules

Two different sets of rules sit behind the one shelf label, and which applies depends on the format. Whole and hulled hemp seeds sold as a wholefood are regulated as a food, not as a listed therapeutic ingredient, so no medicine-schedule entry exists or is expected for the seed itself. Absence there isn't a prohibition. Hemp seed oil is different: it appears in Schedule 1 of the Therapeutic Goods (Permissible Ingredients) Determination (No. 2) 2026 as item 2515, permitted with conditions, with purpose codes A and E, so it may be used as an active in a listed medicine. That permission is tightly drawn. Cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinols are mandatory components and both are capped by concentration, the route is limited to oral, the daily dose is capped, and two warning statements are required on the label. Being a permitted ingredient doesn't amount to TGA endorsement, and it doesn't create a claim: the permitted indications cache, complete across all 17 Parts, returns no indication for either hemp seeds or hemp seed oil, so there's no TGA-permitted therapeutic wording available to cite for this family.

Read the instrument: Schedule 1, item 2515.
