Iron
Iron's what carries oxygen round your body.
Run low and you'll feel tired, foggy and worn out by things that didn't used to bother you. It's the most common nutrient shortfall there is, and women lose more of it than men do.

Is Iron right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
How much actual iron is in an iron tablet?
Far less than the compound weight suggests. Ferrous fumarate is about 33 per cent iron by weight, ferrous sulfate 20 per cent and ferrous gluconate 12 per cent, so identical-looking tablets can differ several-fold. Australian labels declare elemental iron separately. Compare that figure between products, not the milligrams of the salt.
Why does iron cause constipation?
Only a fraction of an oral dose is absorbed, so the remainder travels through the bowel, where it irritates the lining and alters gut bacteria. A meta-analysis of 43 trials in 6,831 adults found ferrous sulfate raised the odds of gastrointestinal side effects roughly twofold against placebo. Dark stools are expected; pain is not.
Is it better to take iron every day or every second day?
A dose raises hepcidin, the hormone that blocks absorption, for around a day afterwards. In iron-depleted women, alternate-day dosing produced higher cumulative fractional absorption than consecutive days — 21.8 per cent against 16.3 per cent. Your schedule depends on why you are taking it, so agree it with your doctor or our naturopaths.
Do I need a blood test before taking iron?
Yes. healthdirect states the only reliable way of telling if you are iron deficient is an iron study blood test, and advises seeing a doctor before taking any iron supplement. Australian laboratories generally diagnose iron deficiency below 30 micrograms per litre of ferritin in adults. The body cannot excrete surplus iron.
