Propolis
The bees' own hive protector, for your mouth and throat.
Bees seal their hive with propolis, a resin they gather from trees. Mouthwashes, sprays and lozenges put it right where you want it, on your mouth, gums and throat.

Is Propolis right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
What's propolis actually for?
Most of the evidence is about the mouth. Propolis mouthwash reduced severe mouth ulcers (oral mucositis) across five randomised trials in people having cancer treatment, and propolis products reduced dental plaque across 45 studies. There's a smaller amount of research on swallowed propolis and blood sugar markers. If you want it for your mouth, pick a format that stays in your mouth.
Why does the label warn about allergic reactions?
Because propolis is a known allergen. Australian law requires every product you swallow or take by mouth to carry the warning: if irritation or swelling of the mouth or throat occurs, stop using it. Skin products carry a separate skin irritation warning and tell you to test before use. If you react to bees, pollen or tree resins, propolis isn't for you.
Why does propolis vary so much between brands?
Because bees make it from whatever trees grow near the hive, so what's in it changes from place to place. That's why Brazilian green propolis and a European propolis aren't chemically the same. If that matters to you, look for a standardised extract that states what it contains, rather than a generic raw propolis.
