Vegan Vitamin D3 (Lichen-Derived)
What is vegan vitamin D3?
Vegan vitamin D3 is the same vitamin, colecalciferol, made from lichen instead of sheep's wool. Vitamin D3 helps your body absorb the calcium in your food, and this lets you choose a vegan source.

Is this the right vitamin d for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Is lichen-derived vitamin D3 as good as regular D3?
It's the same vitamin, colecalciferol, and Australian rules list it as one ingredient whatever it's made from. There's no published human trial comparing the two sources head to head, so the case that they're the same rests on the molecule rather than a study. No one has shown a difference either.
Is lichen a plant?
No, and that's useful to know before you read 'plant-based' on a label. A lichen isn't a single organism. It's a partnership between a fungus and an alga or cyanobacterium, and lichens are grouped with the fungi. Animal-free is the accurate description, and plant-based is a loose one.
How do I know a vegan vitamin D3 product is really vegan?
Check three things, not one. The active should come from lichen or algae rather than lanolin, the capsule shell should be a cellulose type rather than gelatine, and the carrier oil should be a vegetable oil. Products fail on the shell surprisingly often, because the marketing focuses on the active.
