What is aronia?

Aronia, also called chokeberry, is a tart, dark berry sold here as juice, powder and vinegar. Drink the sharp juice straight or diluted, blend the powder into smoothies and bowls, and use the vinegar in the kitchen.

Is Aronia right for you?

Is aronia the same as chokeberry?

Yes. Aronia and chokeberry are two names for the same berry, from the shrub Aronia melanocarpa. It's native to North America and now also grown in Europe. It's dark purple-black and tart rather than sweet, and in Australia you'll mostly find it as juice, dried berries or powder, sold as a food.

The Australian rules

We found no entry for aronia, Aronia melanocarpa or chokeberry on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1, Determination No. 2 of 2026). That isn't a ban. It means aronia isn't listed as an ingredient for listed medicines under any of those names in the data we checked. We also found no permitted indication for aronia across all 17 Parts of Schedule 1 of the indications list. The aronia you'll find here is juice, powder and vinegar, sold as food under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code rather than as a therapeutic good.
