Maca
What does maca do?
Maca is a dried Andean root, and desire is the benefit its trials keep coming back to. In a 12-week trial in healthy men, sexual desire improved from about week eight.

Is Maca right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Does maca actually do anything for libido?
It's maca's most consistent finding, though the evidence base is still small. A 12-week trial in healthy men found sexual desire improved from about week eight compared with placebo. A systematic review that searched 17 databases found only four randomised trials and called the evidence limited. So it's promising and well tolerated, but not proven.
Does maca raise testosterone?
No, and the trials are clear on this. The desire trial measured testosterone in the blood and found no difference from placebo. Another trial found free testosterone went down. A review of 27 supposed testosterone boosters didn't list maca among the ones that work. Whatever maca does, it isn't through hormones, which is arguably the more interesting finding.
Red, black or yellow: does the colour matter?
Chemically, yes, and that's been measured, not just marketed. In the same trial, red maca was highest in GABA and black maca in fatty acids and macamides. Red did better for mood and energy, and black lowered blood glucose. Whether that means different results for you rests on one trial, so treat it as how the colours are traditionally used, not a proven effect.
Is raw powder as good as capsules?
Not on the evidence. Every positive human trial used processed maca, whether gelatinised, dry extract or spray-dried. None used raw powder. If you're adding it to a smoothie for the taste, raw is fine. If you're taking it for a reason, a gelatinised or extract form means you're taking what was actually studied.
How much, and for how long?
Trials used 1,500 mg to 3.3 g a day over 12 to 16 weeks. An Australian listed medicine can't go over 3.5 g of dried root or extract equivalent a day, which is also the top of the evidence. Give it at least eight weeks, because that's when the desire effect showed up. No one has studied it beyond four months.
