How the forms compare
Common questions
What's the warning on the label about?
Every oral St John's wort product sold in Australia must carry it. It says the herb affects the way many prescription medicines work, including the pill, and tells you to talk to your doctor. That's because the herb speeds up how your body clears other medicines, so the usual risk is a medicine not working properly rather than a toxic reaction.
Which medicines can it affect?
A published review names 27 drugs affected in clinical trials and another 20 in case reports. They include the contraceptive pill, warfarin, transplant anti-rejection medicines, HIV treatments, statins and some antidepressants. If you take anything prescribed, check with your doctor or pharmacist before you start.
Which form should I choose?
Almost all the research uses a standardised dried alcohol-based extract, sold here as St John's wort dry extract quantified. Herb powder and dried herb are permitted too, but they aren't what the trials used. No study has tested a tea made with water, and one of the main compounds doesn't dissolve well in water anyway.
