Beauty collagen is often bought on hope, and the answer is usually right there on the label. These are the questions our naturopaths ask in store.

A good fit if

• Dry skin is what you want to change. It's the best-supported result in the trials
• You'll take it daily for two to six months, which is how long the trials ran
• You're happy with a powder, so a 5 to 10 gram serve is easy to reach
• You want the evidence straight, including the 2025 review that questions the whole category

Check with us first if

• You're pregnant or breastfeeding. There's no evidence on collagen peptides either way, and blend ingredients carry their own pregnancy warnings.
• You already take a multivitamin or a hair, skin and nails formula. Zinc and biotin add up across products, and zinc has a legal limit.
• You have kidney disease or a prescribed protein limit. A 10 gram daily serve is a real amount of protein.
• You keep halal or kosher. Only a certification mark can confirm how bovine or porcine collagen was processed.
• The blend includes shark cartilage, chicken cartilage or hyaluronic acid taken by mouth. Each comes with its own label conditions.
• You're buying it for hair or nails. That evidence is much weaker than the skin evidence, and we'd rather tell you before you buy.
• You take prescription medicines. Check with your doctor, pharmacist or our naturopaths before you start.

• Unflavoured hydrolysed collagen powder. Best known for: The plain version, and the one that makes a 5 to 10 gram serve easy. Absorption: Short peptides that mix into a cold or hot drink without going gluggy. Typical use: Stirred into water or coffee once a day, with nothing else taking up room in the scoop.
• Flavoured beauty blend with vitamin C, zinc, biotin or silica. Best known for: The classic skin, hair and nails tub, and how most Australian beauty collagen is sold. Absorption: The collagen behaves the same; vitamin C matters because your body needs it to build collagen. Typical use: Check the collagen milligrams per serve, not the tub weight. Flavour and added nutrients take up room.
• Low-molecular-weight collagen peptide. Best known for: Broken down further, into tripeptides, and dosed at around 1 to 1.65 grams rather than 5 to 10. Absorption: Sold on peptide size; the trials behind it used specific branded peptides. Typical use: Fine if you want a small serve, but a generic 1 gram product won't necessarily behave the same.
• Collagen with hyaluronic acid. Best known for: The hydration combination, and the pairing with the least evidence behind the pairing itself. Absorption: Not shown to be any different from collagen alone. Typical use: In a listed medicine, hyaluronate taken by mouth comes with conditions: adults only, a pregnancy warning and a three-month limit.
• Capsules, tablets and gummies. Best known for: Convenience, and no taste to get past. Absorption: The same peptide once swallowed; the issue is how much, not how well it's absorbed. Typical use: Do the maths on the label. Many give you well under a gram a day, below anything tested.
• Vegan collagen builder. Best known for: Containing no collagen at all, just amino acids and supporting nutrients. Absorption: Not comparable, as there's no collagen peptide in it to absorb. Typical use: The option if you avoid animal products. Judge it on its own evidence, not collagen's.

Reference values. None. Collagen isn't an essential nutrient, so the NHMRC sets no recommended intake for it, and there's no Australian target to fall short of.

Typical supplemental range. Across randomised trials, doses ranged from 1 to 10 grams a day, most often 4 grams, with a middle value of 3.5 grams. A separate review of 11 trials put the range at 2.5 to 10 grams a day over 8 to 24 weeks. Australian beauty powders are usually scooped at 5 to 10 grams, at or above that range. Capsules, tablets and gummies often give well under a gram a day, which is below it.

Upper level. None is set. Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1) gives hydrolysed collagen no maximum daily dose and no warning statement. The caps apply to what's blended in rather than to the collagen: 12 mg of astaxanthin, 200 mg of sodium hyaluronate taken by mouth and 50 mg of zinc taken internally.

Worth knowing. The number worth checking is grams of collagen per serve, because that's where a flavoured tub and a plain one differ most. Trials reporting skin results ran 8 to 24 weeks, so a month isn't long enough to judge it. What you need depends on your age, diet and health, so talk to one of our naturopaths.

• You have a fish allergy. Don't take marine-sourced products, or any product that doesn't state its source.
• You have an egg allergy. Don't take a formula containing eggshell membrane.
• The blend contains shark cartilage. Its mandatory warning rules out children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and anyone who has recently had a heart attack, surgery or a major accident, unless a doctor advises otherwise.
• The listed medicine contains sodium hyaluronate taken by mouth. It's for adults only, not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding, and for three months at most.
• The blend contains chicken sternum cartilage or hydrolysed chicken cartilage extract. It's for adults only, and only by mouth.
• You're pregnant or breastfeeding. There's no evidence on collagen peptides either way, and the whole formula needs checking.
• Children and teenagers. There's no trial evidence under 18, and several blend ingredients are for adults only.
• You take zinc from more than one product. Zinc taken internally is capped at 50 mg, and above 25 mg a listed medicine must carry a warning.
• You take high-dose biotin and have a blood test coming up. Tell whoever takes the sample what you're taking.
• You have kidney disease or a prescribed protein restriction. A 10 gram serve is a meaningful amount of protein.
• You follow halal, kosher or other religious dietary rules. Only a certification mark confirms how it was processed.
• You're vegan or vegetarian. Collagen comes from animals, and vegan collagen builders contain no collagen.
