NOW Foods Saw Palmetto Extract brings saw palmetto berry extract, zinc and pumpkin seed oil together in one softgel. Every two softgels carry 160 mg of saw palmetto berry extract (Serenoa repens, fruit), 20 mg of zinc from zinc gluconate and 1,000 mg of pumpkin seed oil. Take two softgels twice a day with food, with 90 softgels in the pack.

Why is saw palmetto sometimes listed as Serenoa repens?

Serenoa repens is the botanical name of the palm the berry comes from. Australia's permitted ingredients list uses that Latin name, not the common one, and many labels print both. So if you're checking an ingredient list and can't see saw palmetto, look for Serenoa repens instead. It's the same plant.

Is saw palmetto allowed in supplements in Australia?

Yes. It's a permitted ingredient in listed medicines, at item 4506 of Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1), under the name SERENOA REPENS. That means a listed product can contain it. It doesn't mean the TGA has approved it for any health use, and we found no permitted health claim specific to saw palmetto.

The evidence, and its limits

The Australian rules

Saw palmetto is allowed in listed medicines. It's on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1, Determination No. 2 of 2026) as item 4506, under its botanical name SERENOA REPENS rather than its common name, as an active ingredient and in homoeopathic preparations. That's why a search for "saw palmetto" alone can come up empty. Being on the list means a listed medicine can contain it. It isn't the government endorsing it, and it doesn't make saw palmetto a treatment for anything. We found no saw palmetto-specific permitted indication.
