What is milk thistle used for?
Milk thistle is the herb people choose for everyday support for a hard-working liver, which deals with everything you eat, drink and breathe in. Look for the silymarin figure on the pack, because that's the part the research used.

Is Milk Thistle right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Milk thistle, silymarin, silybin. What am I actually buying?
They're three different things. Milk thistle is the plant. Silymarin is the concentrated mix of plant compounds taken from its fruit, and it's what the trials measured. Silybin, also spelled silibinin, is the single most active compound in that mix. Labels use all three, so compare products by milligrams of silymarin per daily dose.
Is milk thistle a liver detox?
Not in the way that word usually gets used. In Australia, the only permitted wording is about supporting your body's own natural cleansing processes, and the same rule doesn't allow linking it to drugs or alcohol. So it's not a hangover cure, it doesn't flush out toxins, and it's not for after a big weekend. Think support, not a clean-out.
Will milk thistle interfere with my medication?
Usually not, and the research on this is unusually good. Across 13 studies of how it interacts with medicines, it didn't strongly or moderately block or speed up the enzymes that process medicines. Two exceptions matter: HIV antiretrovirals, where reviews disagree, and medicines with a narrow safety window. Check with your doctor or pharmacist first.
