Is Ginseng right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
What's the difference between red, white and American ginseng?
Red and white ginseng come from the same plant, Panax ginseng, processed differently. White is air-dried, while red is steamed and dried, repeatedly, which changes its ginsenoside make-up and creates ginsenoside Rg3, a compound found only in red ginseng. Red is traditionally seen as the warmer, more stimulating form. American ginseng is a separate species, Panax quinquefolius, with a different ginsenoside mix and its own research, strongest for working memory within hours of a dose and for the blood sugar rise after a meal.
Is Siberian ginseng the same thing as ginseng?
No. Siberian ginseng is Eleutherococcus senticosus, a different genus in the same plant family, and it has its own entries on Australia's permitted ingredients list. It's grouped with ginseng because both were labelled adaptogens in the 20th century, not because of botany or chemistry. None of Panax ginseng's evidence applies to it, and its own best trial, in people with long-standing unexplained fatigue, didn't show an overall benefit. If a label says Siberian, you aren't buying Panax.
Does ginseng raise your blood pressure or keep you awake?
On blood pressure, no. Pooling 17 trials in 1,381 people found no significant effect on systolic, diastolic or mean arterial pressure, and the authors wrote that worry about raising blood pressure shouldn't put people off ginseng. Sleep is a fairer concern: disturbed sleep is one of the most commonly reported side effects, which is why the usual advice is to take it in the morning. A trial that looked specifically for heat-type symptoms at 1.8 and 3.6 g a day found no difference from placebo.
