What does selenium do?
Your thyroid uses selenium to turn its hormone into the active form, and your antioxidant enzymes are built from it. At least 30 proteins in your body need it, and a little goes a long way.

Is Selenium right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Why is the dose only 150 micrograms when the studies used 200?
Because Australian law says so. Every selenium ingredient in Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1) caps a listed medicine at 150 micrograms of selenium per maximum daily dose, and requires a label warning that selenium is toxic in high doses. Most overseas trials used 200 micrograms a day, and some used more. That gap is real, we'd rather name it than gloss over it, and the answer isn't to take two products at once.
Which form should I buy?
Selenomethionine raises and holds blood selenium best. It rose 93% over nine months at 200 micrograms a day, the biggest rise of the three forms tested. Selenium-enriched yeast is the only form that lowered markers of oxidative damage in a trial that tested both side by side. Inorganic selenite and selenate build up less of a reserve, but reach the enzymes faster. If you avoid yeast, choose selenomethionine or a selenite or selenate salt.
Should I take selenium just in case?
We wouldn't suggest it. A Cochrane review of 27,232 adults in randomised trials found, with high certainty, no reduction in any cancer. Trials at low risk of bias suggested a higher risk of melanoma, and men whose selenium levels were already highest had more high-grade prostate cancer on supplements. More isn't better with selenium. A blood test and a chat beat a guess.
