What does vitamin D do?
Vitamin D helps your body absorb and use the calcium you eat, so your bones get what they need. Most of it is made in your skin in the sun, and a supplement tops you up when sunshine is short.

Is Vitamin D right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
How common is vitamin D deficiency in Australia?
More common than the climate suggests. In the national health survey, 23 per cent of Australian adults were deficient: 17 per cent mildly and six per cent moderately. The rate rose to 36 per cent in winter, compared with 14 per cent in summer, and reached 49 per cent in Victoria and the ACT during winter.
What is the difference between vitamin D2 and vitamin D3?
D3, or colecalciferol, is the form your skin makes from sunlight, and it's usually sourced from lanolin or lichen. D2, or ergocalciferol, comes from fungi and is vegan by default. Both are absorbed, but D3 raises your blood levels higher and keeps them there longer, which is why most Australian products use it.
Should I get my vitamin D tested?
It depends on your risk, not curiosity. A Medicare rebate applies only when specific criteria are met, such as deeply pigmented skin, severe lack of sun, malabsorption, kidney failure, abnormal calcium and several others. The test measures 25-hydroxyvitamin D, and Australian guidance treats 50 nmol/L or above as adequate all year round.
Can I get enough vitamin D from sunlight instead of a supplement?
Many Australians can. The 2024 position statement suggests most people with fair to olive skin need under ten minutes of summer sun on around 35 per cent of the body, several days a week. Winter in the southern states takes a lot longer, and deeply pigmented skin needs roughly two and a half times the exposure.
