Whey Protein Isolate
What is whey protein isolate?
Whey protein isolate is whey filtered down to almost pure protein, so most of the lactose and fat is gone. It's a great pick if bigger serves of dairy don't sit well, or you're watching carbs and fat closely.

How the forms compare
Common questions
How much lactose is actually in whey protein isolate?
Very little. The industry standard puts lactose in an isolate at roughly 0.5 to 1.0 per cent, so a 30 gram serve has about 0.15 to 0.3 grams. The same serve of an 80 per cent concentrate has around 1.2 to 2.4 grams. It's low in lactose, not lactose-free, and never suitable if you have a milk allergy.
What is the difference between cross-flow microfiltration and ion-exchange whey isolate?
What each one sorts by. Cross-flow microfiltration separates by size, pushing lactose and minerals through a membrane the proteins can't get through. Ion exchange separates by electrical charge, using a resin. Both are recognised ways to reach 90 per cent protein, but whey proteins differ in charge, so the mix of proteins you end up with is a little different.
Is whey protein isolate better than concentrate for building muscle?
There's no trial comparing the two directly that shows it is. Isolate gives you slightly more protein per gram of powder and much less lactose and fat, but that's about what's in it, not the results. The studies that would settle it mostly haven't been done. Choose isolate for how well it sits with you or for what you're counting, not for bigger results.
Why is whey protein isolate not listed in the TGA permissible ingredients determination?
Because Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1) names ingredients, not grades. Whey in an Australian listed medicine comes under item 5203 WHEY PROTEIN however it was filtered, so isolate doesn't need its own entry. Not being listed separately doesn't mean it isn't allowed. Most sports powders are sold as foods anyway, not as listed medicines.
