Chaste Tree Vitex
What is chaste tree (vitex) used for?
Chaste tree is what most people choose to ease premenstrual tension and breast tenderness. It's the dried berry of a Mediterranean shrub, taken once a day over months rather than days.

Is Chaste Tree Vitex right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Can I take chaste tree with the contraceptive pill?
Check with your doctor or pharmacist first. The Australian label carries a required warning that chaste tree may affect hormones and medicines such as the pill, because its active compounds work on the same pituitary pathway that controls several reproductive hormones. There's no need to panic, but it's a conversation worth having before you start.
Will chaste tree help with heavy periods?
No. A review combining five studies found no difference in menstrual bleeding between chaste tree and placebo across two full cycles. Chaste tree's evidence is mainly for premenstrual symptoms and breast tenderness, so talk to us or your doctor if heavy bleeding is your main concern.
Is chaste tree the same as vitex, agnus castus or chasteberry?
Yes, they're all names for the same plant, Vitex agnus-castus. On an Australian label you'll usually see the botanical name rather than 'chaste tree' or 'chasteberry'. Three other Vitex species are permitted in Australian medicines too, but they're completely different herbs, traditionally used for things like colds rather than cycle symptoms, so don't assume the evidence carries over.
