What is pre-workout?

Pre-workouts are blends you take before training to get set for your session, usually built on caffeine plus a few amino acids. Some skip the stimulants entirely, so read the panel to find the blend and caffeine level that suit you.

Why do pre workouts vary so much between brands?

Because there's no standard formula and no single ingredient called pre workout. It's a type of product, so each brand chooses its own blend, and two tubs on the same shelf can contain completely different ingredients at completely different doses. The ingredient panel is the only reliable way to compare them, and the caffeine figure is usually the first number to look for.

Is pre workout regulated in Australia?

The product type isn't, but everything in it is. Pre workout isn't on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1), because it's a product category rather than an ingredient. Each ingredient inside, such as caffeine, creatine and beta-alanine, has its own rules and its own warnings. Some products are sold as foods rather than listed medicines, which changes the rules again.

The evidence, and its limits

The Australian rules

There is no Schedule 1 entry for "pre workout", and there never could be. It describes a type of product, not an ingredient, so it would never appear on Australia's permitted ingredients list. That is not a ban. What governs a given tub is each active ingredient inside it, checked under its own name: caffeine, creatine, beta-alanine, citrulline and so on each have their own Schedule 1 entry, their own conditions and their own warnings. Caffeine matters most in practice, because Australian law caps added caffeine and requires several warnings once a product passes certain levels. So two pre-workouts can be regulated quite differently depending on what is in them. Being allowed is not the government endorsing any product.
