Description
Instantized BCAA 5000 Powder is Optimum Nutrition's plain branched chain amino acid powder. It supplies leucine, isoleucine and valine in the classic 2:1:1 ratio, and the powder has been instantised so it disperses with a spoon rather than clumping on the surface of the glass. It comes as two packs: the 345 g unflavoured tub, barcode 748927025224, and the 380 g Orange tub, barcode 748927025217. The unflavoured version has no taste of its own, which makes it easy to stir into a protein shake or juice. These are United States packs, so nutrition information is given as a Supplement Facts panel rather than as an Australian Nutrition Information Panel.
Product Strengths
- Tops up the day's branched-chain amino acid intake alongside protein from food and shakes.
- 5 g of branched chain amino acids per serve in the unflavoured pack.
- Leucine, isoleucine and valine in a 2:1:1 ratio.
- Micronised and instantised, so it mixes with a spoon in about 15 to 20 seconds.
- 60 serves in the 345 g unflavoured tub.
- Unflavoured, so it can be added to protein powder, a gainer or juice without altering the taste.

BCAA
What are BCAAs used for?
BCAAs are taken around training to help reduce that deep ache a day or two after a hard session. They're three of the nine essential amino acids. Use them as an extra alongside your protein.

Is BCAA right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Should I take BCAAs or a protein powder?
If you can only have one, choose protein powder. BCAAs give you three of the nine essential amino acids, so they're an incomplete protein by design. In a 12-month trial in 150 people, 30 grams of BCAA a day gave no advantage over the same amount of whey on any measure.
When should I take BCAAs. Before or after training?
Both, and starting before matters more than you'd think. Neither review found an effect when BCAAs were taken only after the hard session, and one analysis found that starting earlier before the session gave bigger effects. So a scoop taken only after your workout isn't what was tested.
Are BCAAs the same as EAAs?
No. EAA means all nine essential amino acids, while BCAA means three of them: leucine, isoleucine and valine. On paper, EAAs are the more complete option, and they're overtaking BCAAs in Australian searches, but we couldn't find a trial comparing the two head to head.
