Precautions
Pea Protein
What is pea protein?
Pea protein is a dairy-free protein that gives your muscles what they rebuild with after you train. It's the base of most plant protein powders, often blended with rice for a fuller amino acid profile.

How the forms compare
Common questions
Is pea protein as good as whey?
Not gram for gram. After a pea isolate drink, peak essential amino acids in the blood were about a third lower than whey at the same dose, and quality scores rank it below dairy because it's short on methionine. But in a 12-week training trial, the difference in muscle thickness gains between pea and whey wasn't statistically significant.
Why is pea protein blended with rice protein?
The two have opposite gaps. Pea is short on methionine and rich in lysine, and rice is the reverse. Blending them covers the nine essential amino acids better than either does alone, which is why most Australian plant protein powders have a pea and rice base, whatever the front of the pack highlights.
Is pea protein a complete protein?
It contains all nine essential amino acids, so by the usual definition it's complete. But it has only about 1.2 g of methionine per 100 g of protein, which limits how much of the rest your body can use. The Better Health Channel makes the same point about plant proteins: all the essentials are there, but one or two may be low.
