Marshmallow Root
What is marshmallow root?
Marshmallow root is the root of Althaea officinalis, dried or ground to a powder, and the plant behind the original marshmallow. It's naturally rich in mucilage, the soft, gel-forming substance this plant is known for.

Is Marshmallow Root right for you?
Common questions
Is marshmallow root a permitted medicine ingredient in Australia?
Yes. Marshmallow root appears three times on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1): as marshmallow root dry, marshmallow root powder, and under its botanical name, Althaea officinalis. All three are allowed in listed medicines. There's no permitted health claim specific to marshmallow, so no therapeutic claim can be made for it here. Mr Vitamins doesn't currently stock it.
Why doesn't this page say what marshmallow root does?
Because so far the only evidence we have for marshmallow root is regulatory. It confirms the ingredient is permitted under three Schedule 1 entries, but we haven't found a matching permitted health claim, a traditional-use source, or a study we'd be comfortable basing a claim on. We'd rather tell you that plainly than borrow a claim from somewhere else. Mr Vitamins also doesn't currently stock marshmallow root.
