Red Ginseng
What is red ginseng?
Red ginseng is Panax ginseng root steamed before drying, and the most-studied ginseng of them all. It's the one people reach for when they're worn down and still need to keep going.

Is this the right ginseng for you?
Common questions
What makes red ginseng different from white ginseng?
Red and white ginseng come from the same plant, Panax ginseng. White is peeled and air-dried. Red is steamed and dried, usually more than once, which changes its chemistry and creates ginsenoside Rg3, a compound the air-dried root doesn't have. Traditionally, red is thought of as the warmer, more stimulating form.
Does red ginseng actually reduce fatigue?
It depends which trial you look at. A pooled analysis of 12 trials found ginseng lowered fatigue scores overall. But the two placebo-controlled trials that tested red ginseng on its own, for everyday and long-term fatigue, found no real difference from placebo. The picture is genuinely mixed, so it's not a guaranteed pick-me-up.
Can I take red ginseng with my blood pressure or diabetes medicine?
Talk to your prescriber first. Red ginseng has lowered blood pressure in pooled trials and shown a small blood sugar-lowering effect in adults with prediabetes, so it can add to what your medicines already do. If you manage either condition with medicine, don't start it on your own.
