Cod Liver Oil
What is in cod liver oil?
Cod liver oil gives you the omega-3 fats EPA and DHA, plus the vitamin A and vitamin D that come with the liver, all in one spoonful. It's the traditional choice, in liquid or capsules.

Is this the right omega-3 for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Is cod liver oil the same as fish oil?
Not quite. Both give you the omega-3 fats EPA and DHA, so cod liver oil is a fish oil in that sense. The difference is the liver, which brings vitamin A and vitamin D with it, and Australian law requires both rather than treating them as extras. That's why cod liver oil has a daily limit of 3,000 micrograms of retinol equivalents and 25 micrograms of vitamin D, while plain fish oil has no cap at all. If you only want omega-3, plain fish oil is usually the simpler choice.
Can I take cod liver oil while pregnant?
Ask your doctor, pharmacist or midwife first, and don't start it on your own. Australian labels must warn anyone pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant not to take vitamin A supplements without that conversation, and also that vitamin A above 3,000 micrograms retinol equivalents can cause birth defects. By law, those warnings sit at the start of the directions for use. If it's the omega-3 you want during pregnancy, a plain fish oil or an algal DHA is the usual choice, and that's still worth discussing with whoever is looking after you.
Will cod liver oil keep me well through winter?
The biggest trial says no. Researchers gave 34,601 Norwegian adults either 5 mL of cod liver oil a day or a placebo through winter, and found no drop in positive COVID tests, serious COVID-19 or other respiratory infections. The immune wording Australian law allows for cod liver oil is based on its vitamin A and vitamin D, not on that trial, and it can't be presented as preventing anything. If winter is your reason for buying, talk to us first about what your vitamin D level is actually doing.
