Description
Nature's Way Evening Primrose Oil 1000mg + Starflower pairs 1 g of evening primrose oil with 300 mg of starflower, or borage, seed oil in one soft capsule. Both oils supply gamma-linolenic acid, and together they bring the total to 160 mg per capsule, which is more GLA than evening primrose oil gives on its own. Adults take one to three capsules a day with food, and there are separate directions for children from 2 years.
Product Strengths
- A daily source of the omega-6 fatty acid gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which few foods supply directly.
- Two GLA bearing oils in one capsule, evening primrose and starflower, for a total of 160 mg of GLA.
- Carries 60 per cent more GLA per capsule than the plain 1000 mg evening primrose oil.
- Dose bands for adults and for children from 2 years, with the capsule pierced and squeezed into milk, juice or cereal.

Evening Primrose Oil
What is evening primrose oil used for?
Evening primrose oil is used to support dry, tight skin. It gives you GLA, an omega-6 fat your skin uses and food barely provides.

Is Evening Primrose Oil right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Does evening primrose oil help sore breasts before a period?
That's what it's most famous for, and it's where the evidence is weakest. A meta-analysis of 13 trials in 1,752 women found no more pain relief than placebo, or than the creams and prescription treatments it was compared with. If it's the only thing you've tried, it's worth talking to someone about what else might help.
Can I take it to bring on labour?
No, and please don't. A meta-analysis of the trials found evening primrose oil taken by mouth made no difference to softening the cervix, and clinical reviews go further: its use in pregnancy isn't supported and should be avoided. Talk to your midwife or doctor about what's right for you instead.
Is evening primrose better than starflower or blackcurrant oil?
They all give you the same active ingredient, GLA, at different strengths, and starflower has the most per gram. No trial shows one of the three beats the others, so choose on GLA per capsule, capsule size and what your stomach is happy with. A blend isn't automatically better than a single oil.
I've heard it can cause seizures. Is that true?
That warning came from a couple of papers in the early 1980s. It was formally re-examined in 2007, and the authors concluded the link was unfounded, asking reference books to drop both the side effect and the warning. Many still include it. If you have epilepsy, check with your doctor rather than assuming either way.
