Description
Melrose Australian Flaxseed Oil is a 200 mL bottle of cold pressed oil made from flaxseed grown in Australia, at Melrose's own farm at Hamilton in Victoria. It is a single ingredient oil with a creamy, nutty and slightly bitter taste, and the panel puts 10 g of the plant omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid in a 20 mL serve. Melrose put the first bottle of flaxseed oil on the Australian market in 1984.
Product Strengths
- One ingredient, 100 per cent Australian flaxseed oil.
- 10 g of omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid and 2.8 g of omega-6 linoleic acid in each 20 mL serve, from the label panel.
- Cold pressed, with no chemicals or solvents used in the pressing.
- The flaxseed is grown in Australia, and the oil carries the Product of Australia mark.
- Fine filtered by Melrose to remove naturally occurring substances that contribute to spoilage.
- A plant source of omega-3, so it suits a vegan or vegetarian diet where fish oil does not.
- Vegan, kosher certified, gluten free and GM free on the label.
- Contains no artificial sweeteners, flavours, colours or preservatives.
- Amber glass bottle in a carton, which is how the label asks you to keep it.

Flaxseed Oil
What is flaxseed oil?
Flaxseed oil is a plant oil that adds the omega-3 ALA to your day, handy if you don't eat fish. Stir it through food or take it as a capsule, with no fishy aftertaste.

How the forms compare
Common questions
Is flaxseed oil as good as fish oil?
They're different products. Flaxseed oil gives you ALA, the plant omega-3, while fish oil gives you EPA and DHA, which your body would otherwise have to make from ALA. How much of that conversion actually happens is still an open question, and we haven't found a reliable human figure, so we don't quote one. If EPA or DHA is what you're after, a fish or algae oil is the direct route.
Should I buy the oil or the ground seed?
It depends on what you want from it. The oil is the pressed fat, so it's the concentrated way to get ALA and takes up no room in a meal. Ground flaxseed comes with the seed's fibre, which is why plenty of people stir it through porridge instead of taking an oil. Buying both isn't overkill, as they do different jobs.
Can I take flaxseed oil on a blood thinner?
Ask the doctor who manages your medicine before you start. Australia's required blood thinner label warning applies to concentrated fish oil ethyl esters, not linseed oil, and we have no flaxseed-specific interaction data either way. That's an honest unknown rather than a green light, and it's a quick question for your prescriber or pharmacist.
