MCT Oil
What does MCT oil do?
MCT oil is a fat your liver turns into ketones, so it raises your blood ketones if you're eating keto or low-carb. It's near-tasteless, so it slips into your coffee, a smoothie or a dressing without changing much.

Is MCT Oil right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Is MCT oil the same as coconut oil?
No. Coconut oil is about two thirds medium-chain fats, but its biggest single fatty acid is lauric acid, and only about 6 to 8% is C8. In a head-to-head trial, 30 g of coconut oil raised ketones no more than sunflower oil did, while 20 g of C8 roughly doubled coconut oil's result. One review is clear that MCT oil results can't be applied to coconut oil.
Will MCT oil help me lose weight?
The effect is small. Three meta-analyses point the same way, but the average change was about half a kilo to 1.5% of body weight. It came from swapping MCT in for other fats, not adding it on top. One of those reviews also found signs of commercial bias in the trials. So it's not a fat burner, and it won't replace changes to what you eat.
Is MCT oil good before a workout?
The evidence says not really. A systematic review found MCT oil mostly didn't improve exercise performance in healthy people. Your ketones rise, but your body didn't use them as its main fuel during endurance exercise. A coconut oil trial in runners found no change in times either. Where MCT oil fits in sport is as a carb-free source of fat on a keto diet.
