Sea Moss
What is sea moss?
Sea moss is a red seaweed from the North Atlantic and a natural source of iodine, sold as a gel, a dried weed or a capsule. Iodine is a nutrient your body can't make, and Australian listed products have their iodine measured for you.

How the forms compare
Common questions
Does sea moss really contain 92 of the 102 minerals your body needs?
We couldn't find any source for that figure, and it doesn't hold up against basic nutrition. Your body doesn't need 102 minerals. No permitted Australian health claim mentions a mineral count either, and a nutrient claim here has to name the nutrient, and the product has to actually provide it. What Australian rules do require of sea moss is that its iodine is measured and capped. That's the element the rules are about.
Are there any human studies on sea moss?
We searched the clinical research for sea moss, Chondrus crispus and Irish moss, and found no studies for any of them. That's a finding, not something we're hiding. Everything you'll read about it is based on its mineral content, its long history as a food, or lab work. The iodine research on this page is about iodine, not sea moss, and shouldn't be read as evidence for sea moss.
What's the difference between one sea moss product and another?
It's not the species or the format. It's whether anyone has measured the iodine. A listed Australian medicine has had it measured and kept under 300 micrograms a day, because the law requires it. An imported gel or a bag of dried seaweed hasn't, and iodine in seaweed varies enormously with species, harvest site and season. That one difference is what changes your risk.
