Acetyl-L-Carnitine
What is acetyl-L-carnitine?
Acetyl-L-carnitine is carnitine with an acetyl group attached. It's the carnitine form researchers study for nerve comfort and mental function, rather than weight and training.

How the forms compare
Common questions
What's the difference between acetyl-L-carnitine and L-carnitine?
They share a name but not much of the evidence. Acetyl-L-carnitine carries an extra acetyl group, and that's linked to support for nerve and general mental function. Plain L-carnitine has the body composition and exercise research instead. Nothing we've found compares how well the two absorb, so treat them as different products doing different jobs.
Does acetyl-L-carnitine improve memory?
The permitted wording is 'maintain or support memory and mental recall'. But the strongest evidence, a Cochrane review in people with Alzheimer's disease, found no benefit for thinking, dementia severity or daily function. A smaller trial in pre-frail older adults did find a benefit using 3 g a day for three months. Think of it as general support, not a memory fix.
Is acetyl-L-carnitine safe if I'm having cancer treatment?
Talk to your oncology team before starting anything. Guidelines specifically advise against using acetyl-L-carnitine to prevent nerve damage from chemotherapy, and another guideline advises against carnitine forms generally for cancer-related fatigue. It's one of the clearest 'don'ts' for this ingredient.
