Cinnamon
What is cinnamon used for?
Cinnamon is a kitchen spice people take for steady blood sugar, usually as a plain spice dose of a few grams a day. Choose Ceylon if you're having it every day, as it's naturally low in coumarin.

Is Cinnamon right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Ceylon or cassia. Does it really matter?
For occasional cooking, no. For daily use, yes, and the reason is coumarin rather than flavour or quality. The tolerable daily intake is 0.1 mg per kg of body weight. A 60 kg adult reaches that at roughly 2 g a day of average cassia, and a 15 kg child at about half a gram. Ceylon has much less. If you're taking a supplement-sized dose every day, buying for a child or already eat a lot of cinnamon, Ceylon is the one to choose.
Does cinnamon actually do anything for blood sugar?
It does something, and here's how much. A crossover trial using 66,624 continuous glucose readings supports a real effect at 4 g a day. The way it works is well supported too: cinnamon extract blocks the enzyme that breaks down starch, and it cut the first-hour glucose rise by 21% with no increase in insulin. On the other hand, the Cochrane review found the evidence insufficient, results vary widely between reviews, and they disagree on HbA1c (a longer-term blood sugar measure).
Will it help if my blood sugar is already normal?
Probably not much. Almost all the positive trials were in people with diabetes or prediabetes, whose glucose was already drifting high. There's little evidence in people whose glucose is fine. That's no reason to avoid cinnamon, but don't expect it to change something that doesn't need correcting.
What about cholesterol, weight and inflammation?
We'd rather be clear with you on these. The cholesterol results show no benefit, or a negative one. Inflammation markers didn't change, with no difference in hs-CRP, IL-6 or TNF-alpha. Weight trials show a loss of around a kilogram, so it isn't a weight-loss product. And the one direct human test of cinnamon and appetite found a 2 g infusion made people feel less full and eat more at their next meal.
Is capsule cinnamon safer than the spice jar?
On coumarin, yes. A listed medicine has coumarin capped at 0.001% under Australia's ingredient rules. A jar of cassia from the spice aisle is a food, so those rules don't apply and nobody controls its coumarin. If coumarin is your concern and you want a daily dose, a listed product is the controlled option.
